Lube is the unsung hero of the bedroom: cheap, useful, and the difference between “ooh” and “ow”. There are four main types, and the wrong one with the wrong toy is a classic rookie error.
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Water-based | Almost everything; the safe all-rounder, easy to wash off | Can dry out, so top up |
| Silicone | Long-lasting, great for the shower | Do not use on silicone toys; it can damage the surface |
| Hybrid | Silky like silicone, washes off like water | Check the label for toy compatibility |
| Oil | Massage, not toys | Can damage some condoms and toy materials; read the label |
The golden rule: match your lube to your toy. Silicone toys prefer water-based lube; some other materials are happy with most types. Not sure? Water-based is the safe bet.
Pick your pair in 30 seconds: our free Lube Match tool asks what your toy is made of and which lube you fancy, then tells you whether it is a love match or a messy break-up, and suggests a few lubes from our shelves.
Care note: general information only, not medical advice. Do a patch test if you have sensitive skin, and check condom compatibility on the lube label. If you are trying for a baby, look for a fertility-friendly lube.
